A JOI/USSSP-sponsored Workshop on
- Costa Rica Seismogenesis Project, CRISP -

Date: October 20-22, 2003
Location: GEOMAR, Kiel, Germany
Organizers: Roland von Huene, Cesar Ranero, Paola Vannucchi, or Sanny Saito.and Udo Barckhausen
Deadlines: September 15, 2003

Purpose: The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) riser drillship Chikyu will be capable of reaching the seismogenic zone of the Middle America convergent margin to investigate seismogenic behavior and subduction zone processes. JOI/USSSP is sponsoring an interdisciplinary workshop to discuss and define the goals, location, and site data for the Stage 2 CRISP drilling proposal for a deep hole into the proto-seismogenic zone. At this workshop, data and unpublished results from the German Special Project (SFB 574, "Volatiles and fluids in subduction zones") will be presented, unpublished geophysical data off the Osa Peninsula will be viewed, and data from the 2003 field season will be integrated into the two drilling proposals submitted to the IODP: CRISP Stage 1, 537A-Full2, and CRISP Overview, 537-CDP2 (see: http://www.isas-office.jp/active_pdf/abstract/537-CDP2_cover.pdf and http://www.isas-office.jp/active_pdf/abstract/537A- Full2_cover.pdf).

Participation: Scientists from diverse geoscientific specialities such as seismology, fault mechanics, structural geology, exploration geophysics, geochemistry, hydrology, and modeling who are involved in studying fault dynamics, earthquake processes and fluxes of solids and fluids are encouraged to apply. International participation and student/post-doc applicants are also encouraged.

Applications: Contact Roland von Huene with the following information by 15 September, 2003:

  • Name
  • Institution
  • Contact information
  • Research specialty
  • A brief statement of interest relevant to the Middle America convergent margin

Questions can also be addressed to co-convenors Cesar Ranero, Paola Vannucchi, or Sanny Saito.and Udo Barckhausen

Limited JOI/USSSP Travel support is available to U.S. Participants
